| Abstract |
Spraying of liquids under high pressure results in a cloud of electrostatically charged droplets. The conditions under which discharges occur, and under which explosive vapour-air and gas-air mixtures ignite during cleaning operations inside containers, were studied. The liquids involved included water, xylene, and toluene. Safe container sizes, pressure levels and liquid flow-rates were established. The ignition risk increased when solid impurities were found in the liquids.
