Abstract A questionnaire survey of 211 members of a paperhangers' union elicited 25 reports of work-related dermatitis. The composition of the paste used by these workers was learned from the manufacturer, and the components of the paste were patch-tested on 11 of the workers who had reported skin lesions. Three of the paste constituents gave positive patch tests in at least one of the workers: chloromethoxypropyl mercuric acetate, 2-((hydroxymethyl)amino)ethanol, and polyethylene glycol monolauroyl ester, an antifoaming agent. The first 2 compounds, both biocides, are capable of decomposing to give formaldehyde, which is thus also a potential sensitiser.
