Title Radiographic evidence of asbestos effects in American marine engineers
Bibliographic information Apr. 1984, Vol.26, No.4, p.281-284. 10 ref.
Abstract Report on a pilot survey of 5,041 marine engineers serving on U.S. merchant ships. An examination of their x-rays yielded a 12% pleural abnormality rate, about 1/3 of which included pleural plaques. Using linear regression analysis, a positive relation was established between pleural abnormalities and age and/or length of service. It is suggested that work with asbestos, heavily used until 1975 as thermal insulation by U.S. shipbuilders, is responsible for the heavy incidence of abnormalities.
