Abstract |
Summary (without data) of results of examinations of 904 workers at gas compressor stations in Kazakhstan. A combination of semi-desert climate with high-frequency noise and vibration made working conditions stressful, especially for the cardiovascular system. When male workers were divided into well-adapted and poorly-adapted groups on the basis of a battery of physiological tests, impaired respiratory function correlated with poor overall adaptation. Female workers showed no such correlation; their respiratory systems seemed more adaptable to the extreme conditions. Among the male workers, respiratory impairment correlated positively with the average length of exposure to the extreme conditions during a working day. The correlation between respiratory disorders and overall poor adaptation is reflected in the high proportion of work time lost to respiratory complaints in the gas compressor stations, and suggests that respiratory function testing can be used for screening of large populations in place of more complex or expensive techniques. |
