Title Mutagens in urine of carbon electrode workers
Bibliographic information 1982, Vol.50, No.4, p.387-395. Illus. 42 ref.
Abstract The presence of mutagen metabolites was determined in the urine of 10 workers exposed to petroleum coke and pitch, and a control group of unexposed workers, using the Salmonella/microsome (Ames) test. Urine samples collected upon waking or on Sundays showed no mutagenic activity in either group; those collected during or after occupational exposure showed high mutagenic activity in the exposed workers (significant difference in the means between the groups). Use of the Ames test could be a useful tool for evaluating health hazards of occupational exposure to mutagenic carcinogenic substances.
