Abstract Outline of the critical aspects of the problem and their relation to fire deaths. These aspects include the identification of common combustion products, their toxic effects and the dependence of their formation on the combustion process itself. The significance of time-to-escape as a key to survival in a fire is emphasized. A model is proposed in which intoxication rate thresholds for materials are obtained using a rodent exposure test method.
