Abstract |
10 of 12 men involved in the cleaning of a condenser clogged with fresh water sponge experienced an acute febrile illness. No chemicals and no respiratory protection were used during the operation. Possible causes considered were toxic agents released by sponge decay, Legionella pneumophila or other biohazards, immunologic response to sponge tissue, spicules or some other organism, but the ensuing studies could not identify a specific causative agent. It was recommended that workers involved in similar clean-up tasks wear supplied-air respirators until the nature of the hazard is known. |
