Abstract The blood cells of workers exposed to various toxic substances were subjected to structural, functional and cytochemical analysis. The substances (toluene, lead, trinitrotoluene, beryllium and a mixture of unspecified toxic substances) were present at levels below or only transiently exceeding their TLVs. While exposure caused no clinical signs of poisoning and no quantitative changes in the blood cells of the workers, there were structural and functional effects at the cellular level. Along with negative effects, adaptive or compensatory reactions of the cells or their organelles were observed.
