Abstract Results of a study conducted in 10 sugar refineries on 95 workers employed in the boiling and crystallisation of sugar: determination of the corrected effective temperature, physiological examination (heart rate, oral and skin temperatures, hourly sweat rate), psychological tests. Discussion of the tabulated results. Comparison of the data collected before and after introduction of better workplace ventilation shows that appropriate ventilation has both physiological and psychological (improved productivity) benefits.
