Abstract The different aspects of a clinical case of lung cancer in a young person with moderate smoking habits, exposed to chromic acid vapours in a chromium plating shop, are described and placed in the context of existing literature. This MD thesis sets out the toxicological data on chromium and the clinical, epidemiological and experimental data on carcinogenesis specific to chromium in general and to chromic acid in particular. In the light of the corrected data of this thesis, the non-carcinogenic nature of chromic acid, as classified by NIOSH, needs to be looked at again, as the substance was shown to be mutagenic in tests in vitro. It also altered the DNA structure and brought about chromosomal changes. Experiments in vivo on carcinogenesis should be continued and cases of respiratory cancers in workers exposed to chromic acid notified systematically.
