Abstract Description of a method for the determination of copper in blood and urine, based on the catalytic action of metallic copper on the reduction of ferric salts by thiosulfate using sulfocyanide ion as an internal indicator. Using a calibration line it is possible to relate reaction time to the copper cation concentration. The results obtained using this method correlate well with those using more complicated techniques such as atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The method is particularly attractive for routine testing in view of its rapidity, low cost and the fact that little instrumentation is required. Studies of possible interfering reactions have shown that the test is selective for copper.
