Abstract The degree of poisoning depends on the quantity of toxic material absorbed in a single exposure. Circumstances of accidents, general safety measures at the time of the accident, the biological fate of the toxin, and treatment at the site of the accident (symptomatic measures, specific treatments) are presented. Toxic mechanisms of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, hydrocyanic acid and organophosphorus compounds, clinical signs and emergency treatment are discussed. Syndromes characteristics of acute poisoning are reviewed: disturbances of consciousness and toxic coma, acute pulmonary oedema, methaemoglobinaemia, antabuse syndrome, acute fever of toxic origin. Measures to be taken in the event of accidental entry of toxins into the eye, skin or gastrointestinal tract are presented.
