Abstract Blood lead, urinary zinc protoporphyrins and aminolaevulinic acid, general health status and duration of lead exposure were studied in a non-homogeneous group of 177 lead-exposed workers. Urinary zinc protoporphyrins are shown to be a sensitive indicator of excessive lead exposure although certain discrepancies were found to exist between urinary zinc protoporphyrin concentrations and blood lead levels - in particular at low levels of exposure or in cases of intermittent exposure.
