Abstract On the basis of findings in enamelling workers, a review is given of the difficulties that face the occupational physician in diagnosing lead poisoning, due to the wide individual differences in the level of urinary delta-aminolaevulinic acid. Emphasis is placed on the value of measuring erythrocyte protoporphyrin - a simple test which is the best indicator of the degree of lead absorption.
