Composition of diesel-engine exhaust gases and origin of the various components; distinction between "white" and "black" exhaust gases and mechanisms leading to their formation; influence of engine design and operation parameters on the exhaust-gas composition (vortex generation when the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber, variables of injection, mixing velocity, chamber design). Description of ways and means designed to limit the concentration of harmful substances in the exhaust gases; supercharging; recirculation of exhaust gases; dual-fuel injection (e.g. addition of methanol or liquefied petroleum gas to the gas oil); fractional fuel injection (i.e. two-phase injection). |
