Abstract Critical review of the literature on the interactions between ethanol and various chemicals to which workers may be exposed. The article considers, in turn, pharmacodynamic interactions related to the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and nervous systems, the liver and blood. Part 2 covers metabolic interactions in ethanol breakdown: toxic substances causing oxidation to acetaldehyde via various routes (alcohol dehydrogenase, catalase, etc.), oxidation to acetic acid. Reference is also made to interactions with metals (manganese, lead, mercury, cobalt, chromium) and carbon monoxide, and to interferences in forensic medicine.
Descriptors (primary) ethanol; toxic substances; alcoholism
