Abstract |
Report of a study to evaluate the US Bureau of Mines research programme on mine disasters and to recommend future research orientations. A definition is given (a disaster survival and rescue system that provides a reference framework for evaluating research accomplishments and the assessment of future needs, and this is used to make a critical overview of the Bureau of Mines post-disaster research programme under the headings: communications; life-support systems; rescue operation. Two topics are picked out for special research consideration: the need for a systems approach to preparing for disaster response; and the special considerations that apply to government sponsored research and development leading to the design of escape, survival and rescue equipment. |
