Abstract When laying bituminous road surfaces, workers have to walk on material at temperatures of up to 190°C. Description of studies for the design and development of suitable safety footwear (maximum temperature of 45°C inside the shoe or boot and puncture protection in the sole), testing (measurement of interior temperature, experimental use by workers over a 6-month period), statistical analysis of the results of field trials, comparison with laboratory tests, comfort, sole shape, wear. List of footwear makes classified on the basis of subjective evaluation and laboratory testing. Footwear with heat-insulated soles should also be fitted with a puncture-resistant midsole. Heavy wool socks offer additional protection against high temperatures.
