Title Pneumoconiosis of shale miners
Bibliographic information 1981, Vol.36, p.412-418. Illus. 18 ref.
Abstract Complicated pneumoconiosis was diagnosed in 4 patients after a life time of work in shale mines. Peripheral squamous lung cancer was also found in 2 cases. The clinical and histological features of the disease resembled the pneumoconioses of coal miners and kaolin workers, and the lungs of 3 patients contained dust composed of kaolinite, mica, and free silica (10-15%). It is recommended that dust exposure be controlled and risks of pneumoconiosis and bronchial carcinoma be studied epidemiologically in industries such as oil production from shale.
