Abstract This code of practice identifies and describes methods of safeguarding horizontal boring machines (including horizontal boring, drilling and milling machines). Sections are devoted to: definitions; design requirements for safeguards; work-holding devices; power systems; coolant and swarf; mist, fumes and dust; lubrication systems; noise; work-area lighting; other general considerations; installation, operation and maintenance instructions; responsibility; safeguarding measures for table-type, planer-type and floor-type horizontal boring machines (machine elements, spindle transmission, feed drives, accessories, etc.); work-area guarding; guarding of automatic tool-changing machines and large horizontal boring machines. Appendices cover: mounting of limit switches; recommended dimensions for platforms and steps; ergonomic data.
