Abstract Using an psychometric function relating objective values to those obtained by Thurstone's successive-intervals method, it was possible to assess the negative utilities attached to physical injury resulting from occupational accidents. The results suggest that subjective values associated with health and physical integrity may differ depending on the degree of industrialisation and economic development, and that the use of methods such as these makes it possible to assess the parameters of the function that characterises this development.
