Abstract Case of carbon monoxide poisoning in the driver of a forklift truck powered by LPG, after 30-45min work in a poorly ventilated ship's hold (2.25 x 2.25m hatchway at one end of the hold). The LPG truck, which was being used as a replacement for a defective electric truck, was fitted with an afterburning device of poor reliability; the CO content of the exhaust gases was 10-25% higher than that specified by the importer of the device, both with the motor idling and under load. Lessons to be drawn from the accident: need for good maintenance and correct tuning of the fuel supply and ignition; need to keep CO concentration below 50ppm.
