Title Proper disposal of liquid laboratory wastes containing sodium azide
Bibliographic information Nov. 1981, Vol.42, No.11, p.A-16 to A-18. 6 ref.
Abstract The hazards of explosions resulting from reaction of sodium azide (NaN3) with copper or lead in the drainage systems of laboratory sinks are described. Such reactions occur when diagnostic products containing NaN3 are disposed of without adequate flushing. A 15min flushing with water is recommended after such disposal. Blocked sinks should be treated with a 10% aqueous NaOH solution. Torches and snakes should not be used on clogged traps.
