Abstract A study of 12 smelter workers before and after introduction of a new method for the continuous production of matte, including screening of the main radiant heat sources and use of local exhaust ventilation. The temperatures and speeds of air movement at the workplaces remained unchanged. The respiratory and pulse rates decreased, the latent period for sensorimotor reactions to light stimuli was shorter, and there was a fall in body temperature from 37°(±0.08) to 36.6°(±0.16). The quicker sensorimotor reaction may be due to the lower air concentration of sulfur dioxide.
