Communication presented to the Technical Joint Regional Committee for the Chemical Industries (Comité technique régional des industries chimiques), Lille, France. Review of the composition of the principal abrasives and binders used in the manufacture of grinding discs and wheels. Study of non-localised hazards: dust in eyes, cluttering up of floor, handling, storage; localised hazards: mixers, presses (crushing hazard), furnaces (electrical hazards, exposure hazards), final machining operations. Analysis of hazardous agents and substances: phenol, phenophosphate dusts, formaldehyde, alumina. Principal hazards of various stages of manufacture of coated abrasives for use in industry (discs, sheets, rolls, endless belts).
