Title Health status of cable splicers with low-level exposure to lead: Results of a clinical survey.
Bibliographic information July 1980, Vol.70, No.7, p.697-700. 28 ref.
Abstract 90 telephone cable splicers were studied. Clinically overt lead poisoning was rare, but the prevalence of central nervous system symptoms was 29% and that of gastrointestinal symptoms 21%. Symptoms were directly related to zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) levels but not with blood lead concentration, which were significantly elevated in only 5% of workers. The difference in biological significance between exposure tests (blood lead levels) and biological response tests (ZPP) is stressed. Both types of test should be used in the medical surveillance of lead-exposed workers.
