Title Mutagenic action of isocyanates used in the production of polyurethanes.
Bibliographic information Sep. 1980, Vol.6, No.3, p.221-226. Illus. 20 ref.
Abstract Toluene diisocyanate (TDI), 4-4'-methylenediphenyl isocyanate (MDI), 1,6-hexane diisocyanate (HDI), phenyl isocyanate, and 1-naphthyl isocyanate, were tested for mutagenicity in Salmonella. TDI, 1-naphthyl isocyanate, and MDI were mutagenic after metabolic activation. The effect is ascribed to the amine analogues formed during hydrolysis. Isocyanates are thus potentially mutagenic and carcinogenic to man.
