Abstract A model of the average hearing loss based on a test frequency of 4Hz and a normal audiogram, taking account of the overall A-weighted sound pressure level, the duration of exposure, and the age of the subject, is presented. The standard deviation of the hearing loss can be estimated on the basis of empirical data from a non-representative random sample. Given a normal distribution of hearing loss (without correction for age), it is possible to evaluate the hearing damage risk according to IS0 or other criteria and to establish the frequency of preventive examinations accordingly.
