Abstract Description of a method developed to determine water-vapour permeability, which is closely related to sweat evaporation. Calculation of resistance to this permeability is based on the relation between the water-vapour pressure gradient through the clothing and the heat flow carried by the water vapour from the skin to the ambient air. The heat flow is measured in a climate chamber by weighing (precision 0.1g/min) a subject performing an exercise test. A new method based on measurement of the partial pressure of the oxygen in the air is used to measure the water-vapour pressure gradient.. The air at the skin surface is sampled in an O2 analyser.
