Abstract All newly diagnosed bronchial carcinoma cases (212 men, 61 women) in Uppsala, Sweden, were studied for 5 years. There was a significantly higher proportion of metal and construction workers, while agricultural workers were under-represented. The incidence of pleural plaques was 4 times higher than expected. In certain occupations dust has an additive effect on the carcinogenic effect of smoking.
