Title Industrial hygiene characterization of the photovoltaic solar cell industry.
Bibliographic information DHEW (NIOSH) Publication No.80-112, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 4676 Columbia Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio 45226, USA, Mar. 1980. 174p. Illus. 179 ref.
Abstract Aspects described in this literature survey and report of studies at 14 plants producing solar cells or materials used in their production, are: silicon cell production; cadmium sulfide cell production; gallium-arsenide cell production; amorphous silicon cell production; installations; toxicology of materials used. Industrial hygiene practices are generally good throughout the photovoltaics industry. The main problems relate to accidental release of toxic materials. Recommendations are made for engineering control of processes involving cadmium, gallium arsenide, crystalline silica, silicon, and a large number of other toxic substances and gases and laser and other radiation.
