Title New method of determining the slipping properties of shoe sole materials

Abstract The elements and forces involved between the foot and the ground during walking were analysed as a basis for development of an anti-slip testing apparatus. The slip coefficient is the criterion for evaluation of safety against slipping. Slip-stick behaviour, the continual transition between slipping and adherence, is of particular interest. Test procedure and findings are described. Sole materials studied were: vulcanised rubber, polyurethane foam, polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic rubber, light cellular plastic, leather, natural crepe); surface materials were: stainless steel, polyvinyl chloride, granite (dry, wet, and covered with oil). The profile and hardness of a material are the prime determinants of its non-slip properties.
