Abstract The effects of isocyanates, especially hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), were studied in car painters, sheet-metal workers (exposed to solvents, but not HDI), and car mechanics (no exposures). The results of lung function studies (spirometry and nitrogen washout) on Monday morning were compared with those on Friday afternoon. Closing volume was increased in HDI-exposed workers, and tended to increase over the working week. The nitrogen washout method indicates small airways effects before they are discernible by spirometry.
