Abstract Recommendations are made for procedures to protect health and reduce accidents in work associated with entering, working in, and exiting from confined spaces. They relate to: entry and rescue; permit system; medical supervision; training; testing and monitoring; labelling and posting; safety equipment and clothing; work practices. Aspects considered are: confined space hazards (hazardous atmospheres, general safety hazards, statistics); development of the standard; training guidelines; research needs. Appendices: cross-reference to OSHA standard; recommended respirator selection guide; sample entry permit; characteristics of hazards.
