Title Fluorosis in superphosphate industry.
Bibliographic information 1978, Vol.6, No.1, p.11-23. Illus. 25 ref.
Abstract The effect of chronic fluorine exposure on 58 workers in the superphosphate industry was studied and compared with a control group. The concentrations of fluorine to which the workers were exposed were measured. Occurrence of sneezing, sore throat, lacrymation and coughing was statistically significant among exposed workers. Dental enamel mottling was not present; this could be explained by the fact that susceptibility to this condition is restricted to a sharply defined age group. There was no statistical difference in the blood picture between the exposed and controls; 36% of the workers showed bone changes of the type recognized as produced by fluorosis and such definite changes were found in all workers with over 20 years exposure. The regression line showing the relation between fluorides in urine and the concentration of fluorine in the air is reproduced. Fluoride concentrations in breathing zone of workers (in ppm) and a breakdown of exposed workers according to workplace, age and duration of exposure in years are tabulated.
