Abstract MD thesis. A brief review of the French legislation concerning workplace ventilation and technical data on air conditioning are followed by a detailed study of physical factors (thermal and hygrometric factors, dust, noise, infrasound, ionisation), chemical factors (CO2, toxic vapours and gases, odours, ozone levels) and microbial contamination found in air conditioning systems. Other sections are devoted to a study of "humidifier fever" and other health hazards due to microbial infection or immunological process, and the psychological aspect of the symptoms encountered. A study by the French Democratic Confederation of Labour (CFDT) and the author's personal observations confirm published data.
