Abstract This data sheet replaces the previous one abstracted as CIS 1928-1973, Vad (603). A review of current regulations on this subject is followed by considerations on the historical background and expansion of first aid in France since its origins, emphasising the role since 1957 of the French National Safety Institute (which became the INRS in 1968). A survey of the situation in 1971 led to the establishment by the INRS of an accelerated training programme for first-aid workers, one of its objectives being to increase their awareness of accident prevention methods in the workplace. This programme was launched at the national level in 1974. The author defines the role the industrial medical officer can play in training first-aid workers with the help of the industrial nurse.
