Title Detecting a possible increase in cancer risk for welders.
Bibliographic information Svejsecentralen (Danish Welding Institute), Park AllÚ 345, DK-2600 Glostrup, K°benhavn,Denmark, 1979. 35p. 70 ref.
Abstract This literature survey describes epidemiologic and possible prospective studies in man and animals. The long induction period until detection and the dose-response relation of welding fumes and diseases are pointed out. Study design criteria and interpretation of results are discussed and illustrated by examples of exposure to chromium(VI) and nickel. Needs, design and relevance of predictive studies are evaluated. A recommended test protocol would include choice of welding procedure that has high carcinogenic potency, specific morphology of the fumes and possible synergistic effects, and then carcinogenicity/toxicity studies on suitable animals.
