Abstract Results of an investigation in a Swedish plant manufacturing miniaturised electronic components, during which 75 workers (91% women) using microscopes for assembling or checking the components complained of visual fatigue. The authors examined the workers concerned for refractory disorders, eye disorders in general, and binocular vision. Subjective symptoms of visual fatigue were recorded in 80% of microscope workers. A statistical analysis of the results shows a significant relation between these symptoms, on the one hand, and astigmatic refraction disorders, quality of binocular vision and duration of employment in microscope work, on the other.
