Abstract The total number of accidents reported in 1977 in all industries covered by the Factories Act was 244,436, with 357 fatalities, a record low total for this century (382 in 1976, 427 in 1975). Contents of the report: statistical tables; impact of safety policies and their implementation (joint management/worker initiatives, safety representatives, etc.); major incidents and incidents attracting publicity (hazards from gases; transport of hazardous materials; asbestos); plant and process hazards (flammable liquids, dusts, solids, gases, exothermic reactions, welding and cutting of plant, tanks and vessels); mechanical and electrical hazards (machine safety, glass-bottle manufacturing accidents); occupational hygiene (microbiological hazards, major hazard appraisal, textile dyestripping, carcinogenic substances survey, new developments in respirator design); national industry groups (health service, research establishments, rubber, paper and board, printing, docks, construction industry, food industry, plastics, footwear, leather, engineering, foundries, steelmaking, wire, rope, and cable-making, chemical industry, shipbuilding and ship-repairing, brewing, distilling, drink industries).
