Abstract This academic dissertation is a summary of a report on part of the METELI project (CIS 78-2021). A sample of 902 workers in various jobs (foundries, heavy and precision engineering) was studied by questionnaire or medical examination. The emphasis was on the relation between musculoskeletal diseases or mental stress and working conditions. Low morbidity was related to high occupational status. Stress symptoms, illness absenteeism and premature chronic disability were most common in employees having the most hazards and stress factors. There were no diseases typical of any category of workers. Diseases of the locomotor system can be attributed to working conditions, especially for blue-collar workers.
