Abstract This is a report on immunity to tetanus in a sample of Spanish workers. An introduction deals with the epidemiology of tetanus in the world (geographic foci and conducive conditions: hot, damp climate, soil rich in organic matter, poor hygiene conditions) and in Spain (where there have been more than 33,000 deaths since the beginning of the century) and other countries. 409 workers of both sexes, aged 15-65 years, resident in Majorca (Balearic Islands) were studied by questionnaire and medical examination. Antitetanus antibodies were determined by haemagglutination. 48% of the subjects had received preventive antitetanus treatment, while 15% were inadequately immunised, and 85.9% had antibody titres lower than 0.01IU. The need for routine vaccination is stressed.
