Abstract The exchange between smoke escaping from premises on fire and fresh air from neighbouring premises plays an important role in the spread of fires, and affects the extent to which the neighbouring premises can be used as emergency exits. The volume of flow of smoke is caused by differences in pressure arising between the 2 premises on account of the difference in temperature. This article studies these differences and the physical laws on which they are based, and calculates the flow volume of fresh air required to prevent smoke escaping from burning premises.
