Title Bronchopulmonary disease due to cemented carbide dust
Original title Broncho-pneumopathies causées par les poussières de métaux durs. [in French]
Bibliographic information Université Louis Pasteur, Faculté de médecine de Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France, 1977. 135p. 55 ref.
Abstract MD thesis. The author describes the process of sintering metal powders and the various stages in the production of cemented carbides, and refers to the high dust levels in workplaces where cases of diffuse interstitial fibrosis were found among the workers (mixtures of powders used, machining of parts before sintering, grinding of cemented carbide tools). In chapter 3 she reviews (with reference to the literature) the bronchopulmonary diseases linked to exposure to cemented carbide dust (irritative trachaeo-bronchial syndrome observed in 10-40% of the exposed subjects, and diffuse pulmonary fibrosis secondary to the syndrome observed in 0.6-2.5% of the exposed subjects). Other chapters are devoted to: animal experiments, results of anatomopathological studies and pathogenesis of fibrosis due to cemented carbides. The author presents a hitherto unpublished case study of a powder metallurgy worker employed for 4 years in the powder mixing department, and compares the data in this case with those relating to other workers similarly employed. Considerations follow on health engineering techniques which can be adapted to a given workpost, preventive medicine techniques at pre-employment and recruitment medical examinations and periodic check-ups, and medico-legal aspects of bronchopulmonary disease, with reference to pertinent French legislation.
