Title Pi phenotypes and the prevalence of chest symptoms and lung function abnormalities in workers employed in dusty industries.
Bibliographic information Feb. 1978, Vol.118, No.2, p.239-245. Illus. 21 ref.
Abstract Epidemiologic surveys were carried out in 1,138 white men employed in sawmills and grain elevator terminals in British Columbia (Canada). In additional to the administration of an occupational health questionnaire and spirometry, Pi phenotype and the concentration of serum α1-antitrypsin were determined. Most of the workers (88.8%) had the Pi M phenotype, 8.0% the MS phenotype, 2.7% the MZ phenotype and 0.4% had other phenotypes. No differences were found among the 3 major phenotypes in the prevalence of chest symptoms and lung function abnormalities, even among cigarette smokers. Workers having the MZ phenotype with intermediate α1-antitrypsin deficiency are not particularly susceptible to the development of chronic obstructive lung disease under the conditions prevailing in these industries.
