Abstract As a result of complaints made by workers employed in substations or near very high voltage overhead lines (220 to 750kV), the authors measured the intensity of the electric field at various workplaces and carried out medical examinations on 385 workers exposed at these workplaces. The complaints covered objective symptoms (functional disorders of the central nervous system, autonomic dysfunction, nervous asthenia). Haematological tests revealed erythrocyte and leucocyte changes. Several volunteers from the exposed workers, and a number of controls, underwent ergometric and perceptual-motor performance tests. The results showed that there is a relation between duration of exposure and the severity of autonomic disorders. This research was used as a basis for setting standards limiting the duration of exposure to electric fields.
