Title Occupational exposure to coal tar pitch volatiles at pipeline protective coating operations.
Bibliographic information Mar. 1978, Vol.39, No.3, p.250-255. Illus. 11 ref.
Abstract In studies conducted at 8 hot-applied coal tar enamel pipeline protective coating plants mean exposure to coal tar pitch volatiles was 1.89mg/m3 (TLV: 0.2mg/m3). Aerosols produced during coating applications consist of a high proportion of respirable particulates containing significant concentrations of low-molecular-weight polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and benzo(a)pyrene. Interim control measures including respiratory equipment, full body protective clothing, barrier creams and changing rooms are recommended to reduce worker exposure until engineering controls can be installed.
Descriptors (primary) aromatic hydrocarbons; pitch; anticorrosion coating; benzo(a)pyrene; piping
