Abstract Definitions: in this report "energy" means all sources of energy including coal, gas, oil and water power; "power production" means the use of energy sources to produce electricity. Contents: the energy industry: relative scale and accident performance (more than 50 fatal accidents in a typical year, as compared to 450 in all industries and 170 in the construction industry); role of the industries and of the Health and Safety Commission and advisory committees; legislative control and enforcement; the energy industry and its occupational hazards; coal extraction (open-cast and underground); oil and gas extraction; hydro-electric power; fuel preparation and storage; electricity generation; flooding; tip slides; emergency plans (LPG, chlorine, oil); heavy metals and other pollutants, etc.
