Abstract On the basis of conclusions of in-depth studies of lead, asbestos, radiation, vinyl chloride, mercury, and nitrogen oxides, taken as representative of wider classes of hazards, this report examines the decision-making process in Canada in the field of occupational and environmental hazards and makes recommendations with a view to diminishing them. The administrative organisation and procedures; the hazard assessment process (information exchange, research base); the establishment of a medical record system; regulation, enforcement and compliance; and occupational health policies are reviewed, and recommendations made to ensure more appropriate action and better information of the public.
