Abstract Cutting fluids generally contain additives (e.g. bactericides) that can cause dermatitis. Recent research has revealed nitrosamines in these fluids, due possibly to reaction between secondary or tertiary amines and nitrites or nitrogen oxides. Nitrosamines (the commonest is diethanolnitrosamine) are suspected to be carcinogenic. Preventive measures are enumerated: local exhaust of oil mist (rather than wearing of respirator), protective clothing, personal hygiene, isolation of machine-tools for which cutting fluids are used, skin protection by amine-free barrier creams.
